<p>When you actually implement breathing techniques into your daily routine or your grounding practices, you will find that you feel lighter and stress less. Fortunately, there is a breathing practice that works wonders for me as a highly sensitive person. </p>



<p>Namely, most people know it as the 4-second box technique. Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, let go for four seconds, and pause for four seconds. </p>



<p>While taking your breaths, imagine yourself building a square in your mind. The more you focus, the stronger your box and the more you stay sane. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-place-yourself-in-the-moment">2. Place Yourself In The Moment</h2>



<p>Especially when you are in a chaotic environment or under a lot of stress, you might feel attacked and react poorly to your situation. Be it a panic attack induced by anxiety or isolation from the outside world, you can avoid the negative reaction by noticing your six senses. </p>



<p>If you need some grounding from the life around you, begin to notice what you see. Then what you hear, and listen intently. After, do the same with the sense of touch, taste, and smell. </p>



<p>Most importantly, avoid making judgments on your observations because it can lead to overthinking. After you place yourself at the moment, think about what you feel internally as this is your &#8220;sixth&#8221; sense, or rather, your intuition. Notice that you have control of your environment, and you are safe and sane. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-take-away-one-of-your-senses-to-remain-sane">3. Take Away One Of Your Senses To Remain Sane</h2>



<p>On the contrary of realizing all of your senses, try taking one or more senses away from yourself. It may seem counterintuitive, but if you remain overstimulated, you will need to take a different approach.</p>



<p>By taking away one of your external senses, you allow your body to relax and focus on where the real cause of anxiety is coming from. You can focus on trusting your intuition and your emotions for what they are. Validate yourself to stay grounded.</p>

<p>Thoroughly, remind yourself of the love you are capable of sharing and feeling. Showing your gratitude for the people around you is widely known to inspire feelings of appreciation and other forms of positive energy. </p>



<p>This skill is simple. The more you realize what you have, the more you accept the privileges you maintain. Acknowledge that you don&#8217;t need to have control over the chaos because you already have everything you need to stay sane.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-take-away-small-things-that-no-longer-serve-you">5. Take Away Small Things That No Longer Serve You</h2>



<p>Granted, this step is not meant for copious amounts of decluttering. It is simply about taking any small step towards getting rid of things that no longer serve you.</p>



<p>For instance, deleting apps on your phone that you don&#8217;t use anymore. If you find yourself with more motivation, then you can do an entire digital declutter. This is not as daunting as throwing away physical items, but it can provide you with just as much mental release.</p>

<p>Notably, you can set time limits on your phone for particular apps you have addictions to. You could also set alarms and reminders to get off your phone. Also, it could prove beneficial to instead follow people and accounts that add something to your life be it inspiration or entertainment. </p>



<p>Avoid spending too much time on social media to avoid becoming an <strong><a href="https://www.addictioncenter.com/drugs/social-media-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">addicted</a></strong> and jealous person. Social media has a habit of enforcing other negative emotions like depression and. anxiety. If you already struggle with these mental states in your daily life, it&#8217;s unreasonable to escape your current reality by feeding into a false one. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-7-stay-sane-with-healthy-alone-time">7. Stay Sane With Healthy Alone Time</h2>



<p>Do something you love by yourself. A mini-date party of one. Think about treating yourself in the manner you would want others to treat you. Yes, this is a form of self-care but also self-love. </p>



<p>When people say to love yourself before loving others, it truly means filling up your cup first, so you can handle the hectic reality of external problems. Stay sane, and remember to love yourself first.</p>

<p>Listen to music, a podcast, or even just white noise. The music can be classical, jazz, or the soundtrack from your favorite movie. Personally, I recommend the movie soundtrack to the Harry Potter film franchise. White noise also includes soothing sounds like rain sounds and ocean waves. </p>



<p>By focusing on the calming sounds, you can close your eyes and imagine being in a world with less chaos. Put your mind someplace untouched by stress or anxiety. A half an hour of listening can effectively ground your mind and keep you sane.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-9-feeling-chaotic-stay-sane-by-reading-a-book">9. Feeling Chaotic? Stay Sane By Reading A Book</h2>



<p>Another form of healthy escapism is the well-known practice of reading your favorite book. Try reading a book that you have read before or a part of a familiar series or author. </p>



<p>This sense of familiarity can release stress or anxiety about whether or not you can actually finish the book you picked up. Stay sane and grounded by avoiding that extra weight and find comfort in something you already know you will love. Surprised to no one, my favorite series to reread happens to be Harry Potter and other fantasy books. </p>

<p>Meditation is another widely known grounding practice for when life gets a little crazy and you need a moment to gather your thoughts and feelings. Preferably in grass or next to a constant flow of water, meditation in nature can add another layer of mental release.</p>



<p>Become connected to the earth to not only be a part of something larger than your personal matters but also to remain sane and grounded. If you know a few things, you know that you are an important part of nature and a valued member of your family from ancestors to the present.</p>

<p>Journal about your emotions, write down your dreams or even transform your thoughts into entire novels. The final tactic helps you to view and dissect your own emotions as though you are narrating someone else&#8217;s feelings. You are not separating your mind from your emotions, you are connecting them.</p>



<p>Most highly sensitive people find that journaling their own emotions without judgment is in itself therapeutic. But entire world-building can be your own personal form of expression and grounding. Write for just your eyes and hold on to your own reality.</p>

Oftentimes, it is more to stress about so avoid the extra things altogether and work on managing the things you already have to stay sane. </p>

<p>Eating a good meal with healthy foods may seem unrelated to your levels of stress and chaos. However, when we eat better, it makes us feel like we have a little part of our life together. You get to control what you eat and remembering your power can help your mind find ease and stay grounded.</p>



<p>Eating healthier helps your physical body just as much as it helps your mental state. Treat your mind and body to regain control of your external environment when life feels a little crazy. </p>

<p>Try not to avoid or push away people who are close to you. Sometimes, quality time is all you need to bring you back down to earth and help you stay sane. </p>

<p>Admittedly, writing this article has proved primarily difficult for me in a multitude of ways. I consider myself a highly sensitive person, however, imposter syndrome hit when I realized I too procrastinate very often.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With some journaling and inner reflection, I was able to construct a comprehensive guide to stop procrastination as a highly sensitive person. Verified by yours truly, these things can help you stop your procrastination and fight the reasons behind it.</p>

<p>Firstly, you have to recognize where you stand in relation to the tasks at hand. Truly take a second to admit that you are procrastinating. Unfortunately, you feel hesitant in doing these actions. Despite knowing they will have a net benefit. Notably, it’s a natural feeling to dread something, what matters is how long you stay in that stage.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sometimes, it can feel like all thoughts of reason are gone and all you can think about is why you shouldn’t in fact do anything.&nbsp;The first step is to acknowledge that you are procrastinating and accept that you have fallen into an unmotivated state. </p>



<p>Granted, procrastinating isn&#8217;t inherently a bad thing. Highly sensitive people will tend to procrastinate from time to time as energy flows into and out of you. </p>



<p>Therefore, you procrastinating is just a sign that you are lacking the energy and motivation to better your current situation. This can apply to virtually anything that you are procrastinating including household chores to self-care.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stop-procrastinating-by-acknowledging-the-fear-of-failure">Stop Procrastinating By Acknowledging The Fear Of Failure</h2>



<p>Procrastinating as a highly sensitive person usually stems from some sort of fear. You can fear the outcome or the process of doing the action itself. Additionally, you may even believe that participating in this activity may actually cause you some harm or discomfort.</p>



<p>Mostly, these thoughts and emotions are exaggerated in nature and unrealistic. Furthermore, the chances of you typing up that report and simultaneously developing arthritis are highly unlikely. In my opinion, what we really fear is failure.</p>



<p>To actually stop procrastinating, you should look fear in the face and analyze it. Where does it come from, and why are you holding on to it? Moreover, this fear is comforting you somehow. If you get to the bottom of it, then you won&#8217;t need to depend on it.</p>



<p>Face the fear and prevent it from taking control over what you think you&#8217;re capable of. You may have to sit down with yourself for a while and sincerely think it over. Notably, you just need enough motivation to want to ask the questions. Your highly sensitive person will appreciate the effort and help you along the way.</p>

<p>Continuously, you can release the pent-up frustration to allow room for the highly sensitive person to stop procrastinating. Choose to let go of this negative energy by first letting go of the fear of failure. Then, you can begin your process of self-care. </p>



<p>Regardless of your methods, most forms of self-care can help the highly sensitive harness their emotions and focus their energy. Meditating, deep breathing exercises, and journaling are all proactive ways to get closer to the inner you. Ask yourself, what truly motivates you? What wakes you up in the morning and gets you out of bed?</p>



<p>Nonetheless, releasing negative energy is rarely ever a bad thing. The benefits include a healthier and more clear mind. Ultimately, this will lead to better overall mental health and allow room for motivation to flourish.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-create-a-clean-space-to-inspire-yourself">Create a Clean Space To Inspire Yourself</h2>



<p>While procrastinating, highly sensitive people tend to utilize the smallest excuses to avoid the task they are supposed to be doing. Intentions can get wary when you are in an environment that is screaming for your attention. With this in mind, take a look around you. Could the space you&#8217;re working use a little bit of TLC? Or try the famous <strong><a href="https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/organizing/a25846191/what-is-the-konmari-method/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KonMari method?</a></strong></p>



<p>The mind can create the most beautiful things when given the space to be inspired. Similarly, you can be the most productive highly sensitive person once you have a clean or at least tidy area to work in. </p>



<p>The other steps may seem more draining and definitely require more effort. However, after they&#8217;re done, you can cater towards the easier actions. Hence, tidying up for 10 minutes out of your day to put you in a better state of mind. After cleaning, you will feel not only physically cleansed but mentally lighter as well. </p>

<p>Often, highly sensitive people can tend to get bursts of energy and then may get exhausted before finding a routine. Meanwhile, you still need to find the motivation to create an effective routine that works primarily for you and your schedule. </p>



<p>This motivation can come from finding things to be grateful for in your life and showing appreciation. Also, you can take the time for yourself to fully relax. You may feel inspired to start something new.  By changing your mindset, you can stop procrastinating and continue in your approach to a new lifestyle.</p>



<p>Alternatively, you could choose to make smaller to-do lists in order to feel rewarded for accomplishing the items on them. Understand your capabilities and start small and easy to gradually build up that motivation. </p>



<p>Or, decide to tackle the hardest task and then the rest in descending order of difficulty. It could lift a weight off of your shoulders that makes all of the other things seem easier in comparison.</p>

<p>Ultimately, you will find that you limit yourself with the amount of time you allot for each job on your daily to-do list. If you tell yourself it will take you one week to complete an undertaking, then it shall. Meanwhile, if you give yourself one day then you will discover the same notion. </p>



<p>Curiously, the key to stopping procrastination on a daily basis is to set aside a specific time for every task. This process is often referred to as &#8220;time blocking&#8221;. The idea of organizing your day or your to-do list from the hour you wake, to the time you wish to finish working. </p>



<p>Additionally, you should try grouping your items by category. For instance, if you intend to check the mail think about what else you could accomplish outside. Take out the trash or go for a walk. Productivity comes in all shapes and sizes, so set aside the time and begin stopping your procrastination.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hold-yourself-accountable-when-procrastinating">Hold Yourself Accountable When Procrastinating</h2>



<p>On the other hand, complacency is the downfall of productivity. Once you begin being comfortable with not improving, you are more likely to procrastinate. Once you have a routine that works for you, you have to try your best to stick to it. </p>



<p>In the event something isn&#8217;t working, then you should change it. There is virtually no use in a lifestyle that doesn&#8217;t serve you. Let there be consequences for not following through, but don’t be too hard on yourself. </p>



<p>Perhaps, you can give yourself a consequence when you don&#8217;t live up to your standards. Then, reward yourself when doing well on completing what you set out to do. Essentially, the goal is to find a healthy balance. Only then can you start practicing it to stop procrastinating.</p>

<p>In the past one and a half years, many of us found it challenging to remain positive. After all, our lives were dramatically changed when Covid-19 arrived in our country.</p>



<p>Keeping a positive mindset during such challenging times is a real struggle for many. However, it is possible to keep your head up during tough times. In this article, I&#8217;ll share my favorite method to keep my hopes up &#8211; romanticizing my life.</p>
